OK, we realise they’re small, but with 10 million plastic bottles used every day in the UK, bottle tops certainly add up.
Marjorie from Reading asked why she has to take bottle tops off, when reprocessing plants like Closed Loop can recycle the tops and separate out the coloured flakes of plastic from the clear ones. Reading Council‘s website explains that its a health and safety issue, as leaving the tops on may cause the plastic bottles to explode as they are being compressed into bales for transport.
As with lots of recycling questions, what seems a simple question is complicated as there is so much variation across the country.
What do you do with your bottle tops? Do you know why you have to leave them on or off in your area?
