Bin Doctors Adam and Sarah paid a visit to Brentford Market in Hounslow last Sunday, and were joined by members of the Brentford Recycling Action Group who were giving away their reusable bags to help reduce plastic waste.
And with lots of high quality affordable street food, fruit, vegetables, bread and meat on sale, its not surprising that our Bin Doctors had a lot of discussions about the how to make the most of your food at home.
Did you know that a third of waste put in kitchen bins across West London is food waste? The Rubbish Diet were giving away spaghetti measurers to help residents to be portion perfect! These measure a portion for one, two or three people, to help work out how much dry spaghetti is required before cooking.
The Rubbish Diet had lots of ideas to help love your leftovers too! Claudia from Brentford wanted to know if leftover rice could be reused? Ideally, cooked rice should be eaten straight after cooking. If this is not possible, rice should be cooled as quickly as possible by draining it in a colander or sieve, and rinsing with cold water before tipping into a shallow container. Once it is cold, it can be covered and kept in the fridge for up to one day or frozen. Ensure the rice is piping hot before serving.
Kath suggesting highlighting food in the fridge such as leftovers which need to be eaten first “I put a bright coloured label on leftover containers so they’re easily identifiable”.
Visit the Love Food, Hate Waste website for lots more hints and tips on how to store food and make the most of leftovers to reduce food waste.
We gave away lots of recipe cards with ideas for those leftovers – including Sausage Risotto and Vegetable Lasagne. You can also find more suggestions from other West London residents on the West London Waste website.
Our Bin Doctors also had advice for reusing and recycling other household items. Chelsea from Brentford wanted to know what residents can do with old furniture? Fortunately, there are a number of charities in the area that can collect furniture and appliances from your home, providing that they are still in reusable condition. Residents in Hounslow can contact the Hounslow Furniture Project, or the Chiswick Furniture Centre who can help find that unwanted sofa or table a new home!
The Rubbish Diet will be back at Brentford Market on Sunday 22nd February to help answer your questions on how to slim your bin, and make the most of your food. In the meantime, why not sign up to The Rubbish Diet on line, and take two easy steps to a slimmer bin!
