We’ve been busy in West London – loads to tell you about! But i’ll start with the Best Before picnic…
People couldn’t believe their eyes when they dropped into the Best Before Picnic on Saturday. There was lots of food, all over it’s best before date but still good to eat. We had a special delivery from Joelle’s Homemade Cakes who had made gorgeous cakes from flour over it’s best before date especially for the day.
We asked the zero waste foodies to leave their ideas for using the best before food brought by picnickers and to take the great best before hummus taste off. People mixed all different herbs and condiments to make a great tasting hummus. The best was Dorothea’s grand daughter’s paprika and black pepper mix (yum!). She picked up a few pots of hummus to take home and experiment some more.
Mrs Lee, who dropped in as she was passing, said “This is a wonderful idea. All the people in the sheltered housing where I live hate seeing food go to waste. They’re going to love all this soup and their going to be surprised when I tell them where I’ve been”.
Uparima, Davide and Des (who also entertained us all with his Green Man outfit made from rubbish) from the Best Before Project talked to people about food waste, told them that best before was different to use by and encouraged them to take home the free best before food to try it for themselves.
Picnickers started eating in a car park in South Harrow but by the end they had been transported into the countryside by the wonderful backdrop painted by local Artist Lawrence Mathias with paint reclaimed from a West London Household Recycling Centre.
