Making the most of the food we buy saves us money. It also makes sure that all the resources that have gone into growing the food aren’t wasted.
Globally, about one third of all the food we produce is wasted. Across the world, much of that waste happens in our own fruit bowls, cupboards and fridges at home. Be part of the solution.
Here are our top tips for making the most of your food:
1. Make a shopping list. Before you shop, check your cupboards, fridge and freezer and make a plan for your meals. Then stick to your list! Top Tip: Don’t shop when you’re hungry!
2. Sort your storage. Make your fruit and veg last longer with some Rubbish Diet know-how. You can freeze almost anything including bananas, eggs and milk.
3. Know your dates. Don’t let confusing dates baffle you into throwing good food away. You can ignore everything but the use-by date. Best before dates are about quality. Biscuits might go soft, but the food will be safe to eat. And sell-by and display until dates are just for store’s stock control.
